About the Course
Better Bilingual Evaluations Through Converging Evidence with Emily Sweet
This clinically focused presentation is designed for bilingual or monolingual SLPs who perform evaluations with school-aged children. Attendees will leave with practical, evidence-based tools to distinguish between language difference and disorder in culturally or linguistically diverse students.
This presentation will introduce the converging evidence framework proposed by Castilla Earls et al. (2020) to build an evaluation protocol using both standardized and evidence-based non-standardized measures, including ethnographic interviewing, language sampling, nonword repetition, and dynamic assessment. We will explore how monolingual SLPs can evaluate bilingual or ELL students in the absence of a bilingual SLP. Participants will be provided with resources to build their assessment protocol that can be used immediately in clinical practice.
Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
-
Identify three evidence-based non-standardized methods that can be used in bilingual assessments.
-
Design an evaluation protocol to effectively differentiate students with language differences from those with language-related disabilities.
-
Describe the steps of a dynamic assessment protocol.s.
