About the Course
Beyond Checklists: Rethinking Clinical Supervision in Real Practice
Effective clinical supervision requires far more than completing observation hours and providing occasional feedback. This presentation explores how supervisors can move beyond task-based oversight to develop graduate students and Clinical Fellows into thoughtful, adaptable clinicians capable of strong clinical reasoning and real-world decision-making.
Through practical examples, discussion, and reflection, participants will examine common supervision challenges including identifying gaps in clinical thinking, balancing support with accountability, providing feedback that leads to meaningful growth, and recognizing patterns that may impact clinical performance and client outcomes.
The session will also address evolving supervision dynamics with newer generations of clinicians and strategies for fostering psychological safety without compromising clinical standards.
Designed for supervisors across settings, this presentation offers actionable tools and frameworks that participants can immediately apply to strengthen mentorship, improve clinical instruction, and support the development of competent, confident clinicians in today’s practice environments.
Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
-
Identify factors that influence the development of clinical reasoning and decision-making in graduate students and Clinical Fellows during the supervision process.
-
Differentiate between supervision approaches that promote task completion versus those that support critical thinking, reflective practice, and clinical independence.
-
Apply practical supervision strategies for providing actionable feedback, addressing performance concerns, and supporting clinician growth while maintaining clinical accountability and psychological safety.
